Though a handul of fan-favorite horror films over the years have been directed by women, including Pet Sematary and Near Dark, there's no doubt that the work of female filmmakers has gone largely unnoticed and unrecognized within the genre. True, there are far less women making horror films than there are men, but the fact remains that women are every bit as capable of delivering thrills and chills as men are.
In a press release sent out at the tail end of last week, MPI/Dark Sky Films and XYZ Films made the exciting announcement that they are bringing together some of the top female horror filmmakers in the world, showcasing their talents in the first ever all-female horror anthology. The five tales will each feature female characters in the lead, with Jennifer Chambers Lynch (Chained), Jen & Sylvia Soska (American Mary), Karyn Kusama (Jennifer's Body), Mary Harron (American Psycho) and Jovanka Vuckovic (The Captured Bird) signed on to lend their creative voices to the groundbreaking project. "One of the givens of so many horror films has been the objectification of young women," said XYZ producer Todd Brown, "and we thought it was time for a different approach to scaring audiences and letting the female voice be heard."
XX is set for release sometime next year.
