If you're familiar with the eccentric, entertaining documentary Room 237 (if not, check out our review here), you know just what lengths fans of Stanley Kubrick's immortal film The Shining will go to reveal their pet theories – most of them just for fun – on the film's allegedly coded messages and subliminal themes. Now a group of Australian filmmakers have applied the same critical eye (though maybe with a bit more knowing humor) to the 1984 classic Ghostbusters with their new feature documentary Spook Central.
According to the filmmakers, Australia boasts one of the world's largest Ghostbusters fan communities (known as “Friends of Gozer”), and this film gives them a means of sharing their theories about the film's themes, subtext and subliminal messages, which range from health warnings to moral codes to ads for Coca-Cola.
Spook Central is scheduled to premiere this September, and if this trailer is any indication of what's to come, this one will be on fans' must-see lists. For now, here's the awesome trailer:
