First Look at Elijah Wood in 'Maniac'

I wasn't a huge fan of Robert Rodriguez's Sin City , but one of the things that did impress me about the film was Elijah Wood's turn as a psychotic killer. Wood was so perfect in the role that I wanted much more of him than the film offered. (He'd previously gone the creepy route in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). After the jump, take your first full official look at Wood as he makes a most welcome return to crazy in the title role of the Maniac remake, in one of several new stills from the film, as well as a behind-the-scenes video.

The photos below, from Indiewire, show Elijah Wood as Frank, the title role in the Maniac remake, made famous by Joe Spinell in William Lustig's original. You can also see Wood's fetching co-star Nora Arnezeder, and a creepy mannequin from the film... When director Franck Khalfoun -- who'd helemed P2 and Wrong Turn At Tahoe -- was announced on the project fans weren't all that excited. But under producer Alexandre Aja's tutelage, Khalfoun may yet surprise us. In the video below (which is mostly in French), for example, Wood says he was told that the film would be shot 100 percent POV and that he would only be seen in the shadows.

Here's the synopsis for Maniac, which screens on May 26th at Cannes: "Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt. Frank is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank's obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill."
