When you consider the most revered bands in melodic death metal, Sweden's At The Gates rises above the rest as one of the genre's groundbreaking acts. Although the group called it quits in the mid-‘90s – shortly after the release of what many consider their masterwork Slaughter of the Soul – fans longed for a reunion, which finally happened last year in the form of an amazing tour, which became the subject of a colossal 3-DVD set coming out early next year. The Flames of the End documents the influential career of this talented team in the form of a 6-panel digipak containing 3 discs' worth of material: the feature-length documentary Under a Serpent Sun recounts the history of At The Gates through the camera of the band’s guitarist, Anders Bjorler; Purgatory Unleashed presents a 75-minute live set from the band’s reunion show at Germany’s legendary Wacken Open Air Festival; and Only the Dead Are Smiling contains rare performance footage from 26 shows throughout the band’s history.
Bjorler reports on the band’s MySpace that filming the reunion tour over the course of a year brought back a flood of memories. “The downside to my filming plans was actually reliving all the feelings associated with At The Gates,” he recalls. “All of us basically took the time to experience this tour to the fullest extent. We appreciated every second of it, because we knew that in a few months it would all be over. All the troubles of the past were washed away.”
The Flames of the End is slated for release February 22nd, but in the meantime check out the trailer below!
