I’ve been lovin’ me some dark Finnish music lately – Lordi, Apocalyptica and HIM are just a few of the diabolical contributions from that chilling musical domain – and one of the most respected names in that nation’s metal scene is Amorphis, a band that embraces their land’s myths and legends for epic compositions. The new Amorphis album Skyforger is coming out next week, but in the run-up to that release, they’re letting fans stream the entire album for free. Find out more below the fold!
Popular around the world thanks to gold-selling records Eclipse and Silent Waters, and several hit singles – including the sweeping ballad “My Kantele” – Amorphis maintains a near-heroic status among Finnish head-bangers thanks to their embracing of Finland’s official epic poem, The Kalevala, in much of their music. In fact, the new album is based entirely on that epic, and includes some of Finland’s most beloved legends in songs like “Sampo,” which takes its name from a mystical object of Finnish legend – itself the source of multiple tales, poems and songs (not to mention a few friendly jokes on Mystery Science Theater 3000).
Among the impressive tracks on Skyforger is the powerful single “Silver Bride,” which last month topped Finland’s music charts and spawned a supremely cool video, which you can watch below.
Skyforger is scheduled for North American release on May 29th through Nuclear Blast Records, but you can preview the whole album right now on the band’s newly-revamped official MySpace and be sure to check out the mythical awesomeness of the magic blacksmith in “Silver Bride” right here!
