Today's clip is stylish, sensual and surreal, and comes with some serious cred behind the camera: acclaimed UK progressive metallers Tesseract called upon Emmy Award-winning cinematographer Mark Wolf and the team behind the practical effects in Prometheus for their new video “Singularity,” a sort of live-action spin on the racy Japanese anime subgenre known as “Tentacle Hentai.”
For those of you unfamiliar with that term, don't go racing to Google it if you're at work... let's just say it usually involves intimate relations between young women and demonic or alien creatures, with a heavy emphasis on squid-like appendages. While “Singularity,” which just premiered today, takes a more tasteful (and mostly work-safe) approach, the concept is basically the same...
“Singularity” comes from Tesseract's second full-length album Altered State, an ambitious concept record which addresses the transformations the band has gone through over the past few years. Based on a core law of Physics, the album is divided into four movements: “Of Matter,” “Of Mind,” “Of Reality” and “Of Energy.” The band has been praised for their intricate and complex song patterns, including shifting rhythms, dense layers of sound, and a heavy underpinning of bass.
