The bizarre photo below, which has become a viral phenomenon, depicts a knife-wielding man hacking his way out of what looks like a real shark, and people around the world have been speculating on the story behind it. Most assumed it was staged for the camera, and not some nightmarish act of self-rescue, and they're correct... well, mostly.
As it turns out, the guy with the arm is an Australian fisherman who had just caught the massive shark, and instead of documenting his catch the normal way by posing next to it, he decided to climb inside the gutted carcass, then reach out through its gills and stab away with his trusty knife.
According to Australian news site Perth Now, the famous photo is now mounted in the Metung Hotel in Gippsland, Victoria. John Burns, the host of talk radio show 3AW Breakfast, told the story behind the picture, which was spotted by an American visitor who asked, “Did he survive?” (We're assuming they meant the man, not the shark.)
