Christmas is fast approaching, which means a visit from good ol' St. Nick. But with the good comes the bad, and that is where Krampus comes in. A popular figure in most European folklore, Krampus is a beastly figure that accompanies St. Nick. While St. Nick passes out presents to good children, Krampus passes out beatings to the bad ones. Kind of puts that lump of coal into perspective.
Krampus is gaining popularity in the States (no doubt thanks to all you monster-lovers) and an entire event is popping up in Los Angeles this month. Called Krampusfest, it is a month-long, multi-venue event that takes place in downtown Los Angeles. So far, organizers have announced the Krampus Ball to open the festivities and a Krampus Rumpus to close (a half-dozen musical acts have been announced); a traditional Krampus run (in which costumed Krampuses parade through Downtown Art Walk acting out the terror of the folklore); and a Krampus-themed art show at Copro Gallery.
The inagural year of Krampusfest Los Angeles runs from December 5th through 21st. For more info, to buy tickets, or volunteer, check out KrampusLosAngeles.com
