Today our tour of America's most haunted schools stops at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), a nearly 150-year-old campus with a wealth of supernatural legends, spooky rumors and omens of violent death. Like any historic location with a colorful past, stories passed down from one student body to the next usually revolve around certain key buildings or locations, and UIUC is no exception.

The rumors start in the English Building (above), which was a women's dormitory and gym at the beginning of the 20th century. It had once contained a swimming pool, where a young woman is said to have drowned; some called it a suicide, others an accident, but the tales don't end there: as you might imagine, it's also rumored that the girl is still lurking about.
Stately UIUC Library (below) is said to be haunted as well, with stories of students disappearing forever in its mazes of books, and a ghost that arrives at a fixed date and time (details vary from one story to the next). Some students say that the entire building is slowly sinking, due to the combined weight of millions of books overloading the structure's antiquated foundations.
One of the darkest of these legends is also the most recent: in 1998, rumors began to spread about a mass murder spree psychically predicted to occur on an unspecified college campus during the Halloween season. Details seemed to point to the UIUC campus, but actually matched tales coming from many other Midwestern schools. Thankfully, those turned out to be false... so far.
You can read more about the UIUC's haunted history at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, where they have a detailed breakdown of these strange and entertaining tales... and don't forget to join our creepy college tour by paying a visit to California State University Channel Islands, where the terrifying “well scene” from The Ring was filmed, and the ghosts of real-life mental patients may still be lurking...
