Meet the Man Behind the Music of 'Maniac'

Last week I reviewed the soundtrack for Franck Khalfoun's Maniac – an amazing electronic score composed by a man who goes by the handle of “Rob.” Well, this music turned out to be the gift that keeps on giving – not only have I learned a little more about this mysterious composer, but I was also presented with some stunning remixes of some of the coolest cues from the film.

Check out this behind-the-scenes video, which comes to you courtesy of the fine folks at Icons of Fright, showing Rob (now revealed to be a member of the French band Phoenix) at work on the score. We hear him recreate several of the film's main musical motifs on piano, explaining how he sought to create melancholy, even romantic themes to create sympathy for Elijah Wood's character Frank, which would in turn make audiences feel even more unsettled while seeing Frank performing his horrific deeds.

Now for those new tracks I mentioned: two different artists took a stab (no pun intended) at Maniac's main theme, Rob's chilling but beautiful cue “Haunted.” Here's a dark and intense remix by the French electro duo Get A Room!...

Now for a more cosmic-sounding version by another French group, Junesex.

Thanks to Icons of Fright for sending these cool tunes our way!
