According to the UK Daily Mail, the black-and-white bat was found on the Bangangai Game Reserve by DeeAnn Reeder, Associate Professor of Biology at Bucknell University, who calls it the “find of a lifetime.”

While it’s similar to a creature found in the Congo in 1939, Reeder says it’s not only a different species, but may fall under an entirely new genus of mammal as well. “Its cranial characters, its wing characters, its size, the ears… literally everything you look at doesn't fit,” she said.

She decided to name the genus Niumbaha, which means “rare” or “unusual” in Zande, the language of Western Equatoria, where the creature was found.
