Just a week ago we passed along the announcement from Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor that he was teaming up with legendary director David Lynch on the official music video for “Came Back Haunted,” the first single from the reunited band's forthcoming album Hesitation Marks. In typical Reznor fashion, by the time that news got out, the project was probably in the can already, because the clip is up and running today, and you can watch it below.
While no one knew exactly what to expect from the team-up, given the nature of Lynch's body of work and the cloak of mystery surrounding the film, the end result is still more bizarre than you probably imagined.
Pairing Lynch's obsessions with creepy textures and lo-fi digital animation, the video recalls Lynch's classic Eraserhead and his nightmarish multimedia projects from the '70s with its bloody clay heads and tweaking stroboscopic effects (which, I must warn in all seriousness, may be very dangerous if you're susceptible to epileptic seizures), intercut with jittery close-ups of Reznor. Not for all tastes, obviously... but damn, that song just kills.
Hesitation Marks drops September 3rd from Columbia Records.
