According to a story in the Edmonton Journal, the Tourmaline Oil Company crew was working on the pipeline near Spirit River when they uncovered a thirty-foot section of the fossilized creature. Their work was then put on hold by the company, who called in a team of experts to investigate and work out a way to unearth the entire specimen.

Paleontologists estimate the fossil to be the remains of a Hadrosaurid, or duck-billed dinosaur, which lived during the Upper Cretaceous Period, and say the discovery is one of the most complete dinosaur fossils ever found in that part of the world.
