At last week’s Comic-Con, I got the chance to meet one of my all-time favorite writers, Jhonen Vasquez. Best known for his Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and Squee! comics, and the Invader Zim animated series, Jhonen has fallen off the radar a little bit. So what is he working on now?
“I don’t know,” he admits. “I haven’t had free time to work on anything of my own in like a year. I just finished up the last of my obligations a few days ago.” In addition to a crazy schedule of various convention appearances, Jhonen just finished up a two-issue arc for DC’s Beyond the Fringe comic. “I knew someone who worked at Fringe,” Jhonen said. “They contacted me about writing one of the issues because they knew I was a big fan of the show.”
At the show, I was excited that Jhonen was selling prints of a brand new drawing of his iconic Psycho-Doughboy and Mr. Eff characters. “I haven’t drawn them in forever. It was really fun to do. I thought it was neat to have the black and white with just the color eyes, but I want to rework their color palette.” And I will be there to buy it.
