At the Top Cow panel at this year’s SDCC, publisher finally confirmed that a sequel to the video game version of The Darkness is in the works! Little else was said, although the news is a little bittersweet. More after the break.
The bitter part of this equation was revealed by VG247 that original developer Starbreeze, who also crafted both Riddick games, are not involved in development of the follow up, with commitments at EA keeping them from revisiting Jackie Estacado and his demonic entourage.
Being a huge fan of the original despite the fact that their version of New York seemed to be about 3 square miles, I’ve got some apprehension about this. If they can find a developer that can hit all the right notes that Starbreeze did (stealth, intensely brutal gunplay, the overwhelming feeling of despair) as well as give a good way to reopen the character after the first game’s rather final conclusion, I’ll welcome it with open tentacles.
Oh, and a request to the new developer: Bring back Mike Patton. Or else.
