Update! Anchor Bay just sent out a press release, saying that they have acquired North American distribution rights to the new Silent Night.
The Genre Company and Ember Productions are teaming up for a "loose remake" of 1984's Silent Night, Deadly Night. Frankly I'm shocked it took them this long to get around to remaking it. We've got the details after the jump.
Steven C. Miller (The Aggression Scale) will direct a script by Jayson Rothwell (Malice in Wonderland). This version will simply be titled Silent Night, which is a huge mistake in my opinion. When I was 10 years old and searching the video store for my weekend movie, I was drawn to Silent Night, Deadly Night solely for the pun-tastic title. Malcolm McDowell will play Sheriff Cooper, a "small-town hero ready for some big-time action" when a killer Santa Claus spends Christmas Eve killing instead of handing out presents. I haven't seen Silent Night, Deadly Night in a very long time, but that doesn't sound like a "loose" remake.
Filming begins in the next month, with an eye on releasing it this holiday season.
