UPDATED: Mysterious ‘Mortal Kombat’ Clip Looks Gritty and Gory

A strange new viral video has been making the rounds on the internet, telling a tale of underground fighting tournaments, cannibalistic serial killers, and cops resorting to unconventional means to return order to the city…would you believe this is Mortal Kombat?  Whaaa?  Watch the video after the break!

So Reptile is a head-chewing cannibal with harlequin-type icthyosis, Baraka is a body-mod addicted plastic surgeon/serial killer, and Jax and Sonya Blade are now cops (played by Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan, no less).  It’s certainly an interesting take on the franchise, transplanting the once mystical Mortal Kombat into a gritty, Christopher Nolanesque urban sprawl.

There’s certainly no shortage of gore, distancing whatever-this-is from the PG-13 films that Threshold put out in the Nineties. The final question still remains: what exactly is this?  Obviously it’s well choreographed, and the special effects and moderate star power indicate that this isn’t just a fan film.  Is this test footage for a new movie?  The intro sequence for the oft-rumored Mortal Kombat 9?  Just what is this?

We’ll keep you posted as we find out more.

UPDATED: 6.9.2010 10:25am - Actress Jeri Ryan offers some clarification via Twitter:

Okay, so... Mortal Kombat. It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director [Kevin Tancharoen] to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film.  I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was. And I'm not sure how you can contact WB. to push them to make it. But you guys are resourceful...!
