The next generation of consoles is almost here, and with it comes the promise of new games to flex their increased multimedia muscle. Enter Dying Light, WB Games and Techland’s graphically gorgeous upgrade to the Dead Island formula with a high-gloss parkour polish.
In this 11-minute gameplay video, we’re introduced to a familiar scene for Dead Island fans: a tropical paradise torn asunder by the zombie apocalypse. However, the differences are made almost immediately apparent as soon as the player starts moving seamlessly in a free-running fashion, deftly dodging the dead or building a head of steam to cleave their cadaverous craniums. All of this is stunningly gorgeous—seriously, I’m not a graphics whore, but wow—and running at a buttery-smooth 60 FPS.
The day/night cycle is also in display, showing the shift in gameplay as soon as the sun goes down. The normal zombies, who are aggressive but easily avoidable, are replaced by relentless predators that scramble after you with deadly determination. It will be interesting to see if Techland can balance these two very disparate gameplay styles without sacrificing quality in either.
Dying Light is due out in 2014 for Xbox One, Playstation 4, PC, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3.
