Game Review: 'Scene It? Horror Movies 2'

The iPhone and its big brother the iPad have never been strangers to the Scene It? Series of games, playing host to several incarnations of the popular multimedia trivia game.  Their latest  release is of special interest to horror fans: Scene It? Horror Movies 2 (that's a mouthful).  How does it translate to the small screen?  Find out after the break.

The game's striking aesthetic is the first thing that players notice, mixing Mexican Dia de los Muertos sugar skulls with voodoo shrines and custom tarot cards that amusingly illustrate the game's many trivia categories.  The idea that someone got paid to illustrate a Rider-Waite style tarot deck with images like Killer Tomatoes and Count Orlock from Nosferatu amuses me greatly.

The game itself should be familiar to Scene It? vets, running players through three rounds of trivia questions in different categories, albeit horror-appropriate groupings like Blood & Guts, Werewolves, and Mad Men.  The question formats range from simple multiple-choice to the priceless Name the Movie, which recreates iconic scenes in a low-res 8-bit style.  The sight of Zombi 2's infamous shark vs. zombie scene rendered in NES-style graphics (complete with hokey chiptune music) is one to behold, to say the least.

If there's one issue with this (initially) free title, it's that the relatively small number of trivia questions leads to the game repeating them fairly quickly.  However, Screenlife has solved that problem with additional trivia packs, which add on more categories and questions for the usual 99 cents.  I guess like any good pusher, the first hit is always free…

Scene It? Horror Movies 2 is available now from the iTunes App Store.
