Supernatural Episode 712

"Time After Time After Time"

Written By: Robbie Thompson

Directed By: Phil Sgriccia

Original Airdate: 13 January 2012

In This Episode...

Jody Mills calls with a lead on a case for the Winchesters. In Ohio, a couple bodies have turned up mummified. The guys go check it out, and see a man in a fedora and trench coat chasing a guy down an alley. The boys split up to try to sandwich him in. Dean gets there first and tackles the perp as he is sucking a fiery red light out of his victim. The red light explodes and both Dean and the perp disappear.

Dean wakes up in 1944 and is quickly arrested for wandering the streets with a gun. In the interrogation room, the arresting officer leaves him with the head detective who Dean immediately fingers as a hunter. The detective believes Dean is a hunter as well. They are both after the same monster, so they team up. The detective is Elliot Ness, and Dean is starstruck. "The Untouchables is my most favoritest movie ever!" he stammers, leaving a befuddled Ness.

In 2012, when Jody hears that Dean has disappeared, she comes over to help Sam. They figure out they are looking for Kronos, the god of time. Once he could draw his power from followers, who would give him the power he needs to travel through time. As the centuries went on and society became more secular, he didn't have enough followers, so he had to start taking the power he needed by force. There is a spell that Jody and Sam can cast to bring Kronos, but the only way Dean can travel with him is if Kronos is touching Dean at the precise moment they do the ritual.

In 1944, Dean and Ness are hot on the trail of one Ethan Snyder. They go check out the house he was "living in" in 2012 and see that it existed in 1944. He is not there, but they follow the clues until they find him at a diner. He follows a dame in a red coat from the diner to an alley, so Ness and Dean follow him. Snyder and the girl kiss. Ness stays on them and follows them back to her house while Dean works on his own plan: a letter to Sam, stashed in the floorboard of the abandoned house they are staying at in 2012.

In 2012, Jody forces Sam to "bed" (a blanket and a laundry bag on the floor). He flops down, exhausted. As he is drifting off, he sees something across the room. Directly in his line of sight, he sees his name etched into the baseboard. He pries it off and finds the letter from Dean. Dean was thoughtful enough to date the letter, and mentioned Ethan's girlfriend, Lila. Sam and Jody track down Lila, now elderly and in a nursing home. But she could never forget that night. All the clocks stopped at 11:34 (a side effect from Ethan's time travel) and Ethan strangled that poor man. Sam shows her a picture; it was Dean.

So now they have an exact time. Jody and Sam rush home and perform the ritual. In 1944, Dean and Ness are fighting with Ethan. Sure enough, Ethan begins strangling Dean at 11:34, and he gets sucked into 2012 along with Dean. Ness kicks a specialized dagger into the fray, sending it forward in time, too. Sam is there waiting, grabs the dagger, and stabs Ethan.

Dig It or Bury It?

I love fun, wacky episodes like this. The whole thing was delightful, humorous, and packed with not-so-veiled pop culture references. I wasn't keen on the opening, which started in the middle of the stakeout, disappeared Dean, and then went back two days to describe how we got there. Normally I don't mind devices such as this, but I feel like Supernatural has done this a lot this season. But the rest of this episode was fun, so I forgot about it. There were a few parts that were a little corny and cheesy, but Supernatural does corny so well it is just fun. Plus, Dean looks really hot in his 1940s duds.

Spooky Humor

Dean is going through Ethan's house, looking for clues as to his whereabouts. He instead finds a ledger, listing horse races and bets - from the future. "He's using the Biff strategy!" This, of course, a reference to Back to the Future Part 2. Later, Dean gets the idea to leave Sam a letter from Back to the Future Part 3.

Sibling Rivalry

Dean is still obsessing over Dick Roman. Sam wakes in the middle of the night and finds Dean at the computer. "I can't believe I'm about to say this, but I really hope you are watching cartoon porn." Dean shuts the laptop and says, "It's called anime, and it's an art form." Later on in the episode, Dean grabs the computer away from Sam. Sam says, "Are you going to look at more anime, or are you strictly into Dick now?"

Prophecies?

Dean gets seduced one night, the girl gets pregnant, gives birth 36 hours later, and the baby grows up at about the same rate. Dean's a daddy!
