In This Episode...
While Alison, Scott, and Stiles are in their ice baths, they each envision their way to the nemeton, which happens to be the same night Scott was attacked by a werewolf, Stiles was almost attacked, and Alison and her mom nearly hit Scott when he ran out into the street. The kids wake up, excited to alert Deaton, Lydia, and Isaac that they can find their way to the root cellar now. Deaton is concerned - they were in those ice baths for 16 hours. They have four hours before the lunar eclipse - I’m not sure which fact disturbs him more. Stiles doesn’t want Scott to go back to Deucalion, but he can’t go back on his promise. Deaton backs him up - Deucalion might be the enemy, but he could also be bait. One of the twins (unless one of them is making out with someone, I can’t tell them apart) races in, looking for Lydia to come help him keep his brother and Kali from killing Derek. Not really sure why he thought Lydia was the right choice there, but let’s go with it. They warn Derek, who is weak from healing Cora, and Peter convinces the siblings to leave town.
Kali and Twin 2 are not happy to discover Derek gone from the loft. Before a battle can start, Jennifer shows up, crashing down through the glass ceiling. The twins are back on the same side and try to form mecha-twin, but Jennifer stops them halfway and rips them apart by grabbing them each by their head. She throws them across the room, then turns to Kali. She and Kali fight, then to prove how powerful she is, Jennifer levitates all the broken glass on the ground, then turns it pointy-end out and impales Kali with it. She’s dead. With Jennifer’s attention elsewhere, the twins are able to morph together and attack. Jennifer kills them with a single crack to the back. Then she approaches Lydia, and tells her to scream. Lydia does, and it draws Derek and Cora back to the loft. She needs a guardian to help her defeat Deucalion. It can either be the three sacrificial parents, or it can be Derek. It is not clear why Jennifer needs Deucalion dead. Jennifer is powerful, but nowhere near enough to defeat Deucalion on her own. Her only chance is to team up with Derek (even though he warns her he is no longer an alpha) and attack during the 15 minutes of the lunar eclipse. Derek agrees.
Meanwhile, the rest of the kids have split up. Stiles went home to get something of his father’s so Scott and Isaac can pick up his scent. The were-boys go with Alison to her house to get her dad’s scent, and find the FBI - led by Mr. McCall - in her house, Chris’ arsenal spread out before them. This ends up being a stall tactic on the show’s behalf; nothing really comes of it, other than Scott grabbing a specific weapon he will use later. Alison throws a smoke bomb and the kids head to Beacon Hills Preservation. Stiles isn’t there yet (a storm that Jennifer had brewed up caused him to drive off the road and into a tree, knocking him out) so the kids head in without him. Deucalion meets with them and takes Scott to meet Jennifer at the abandoned distillery, while Isaac and Alison go find the parents. Chris’ werewolf signal works and they follow it to the root cellar. The happy reunion doesn’t last long: the storm has caused the root cellar to collapse, including the ladder. Isaac does his best to prop up the ceiling, but he is fighting a losing battle. Inexplicably, Stiles appears, carrying an aluminum bat, and uses that to prop up the ceiling.
In the distillery, Scott is surprised to see Derek backing up Jennifer. He promises Scott he is doing this to save his mom. Deucalion wolfs out, a strange mix of wolf and demon, and faces off with Derek. Jennifer joins the mix, but is ineffective. With Jennifer in his clutches, Deucalion insists Scott kill her and become an alpha. He lets out a demonic growl that brings Scott to his knees and brings out his wolf. Jennifer pleads, “It won’t end with me. He will have you kill everyone you love.” Scott is hesitant so Deucalion tries to literally force his hand. Scott throws a few flash bombs he stole from the Argents, and everyone separates. The lunar eclipse is in effect, meaning all the wolves are fully human - and Jennifer is gone. Scott worries that she is on her way to kill the parents, but she doesn’t. She returns, in her monster face, and throws Scott away. She grabs Deucalion and beats him nearly dead. Derek stops her, reminding her that Deucalion doesn’t know what she looks like now - “Show him the price you paid.” She heals Deucalion, giving him his sight back. He sees a monster, then Jennifer - and Jennifer collapses. This was his plan: healing Deucalion would cause Jennifer to lose much of her power temporarily. She wants Derek to kill Deucalion for him, but Derek refuses. The two have what amounts to a werewolf slap fight, but the eclipse beings to wane. Jennifer throws a magic circle up around her to protect her while she recharges, taunting Scott that the parents will soon be dead. Scott tries to push through her force field - and this time he succeeds. As he does, his eyes go from gold to red - he is officially an alpha now. By breaking the magic circle, Jennifer collapses. Scott demands she stop the storm, and she does. When Scott declines to kill her, Deucalion steps forward and does it himself, with a slash to the neck.
And all is well.
Derek allows Deucalion to go with this little nugget: “Mom said you were a man of vision. We are letting you go because we hope you can be that man again.” Barf. Anyway, the parents are safe. The twins, as it turns out, were not dead; Deaton was able to fix them up. Ethan and Danny are an official couple, and Lydia and Aidan are well on their way (though I assume it won’t last because she is clearly meant to be with Stiles). Alison wants her dad to teach her to be a better fighter, so she can “protect those who cannot protect themselves.” Scott’s dad has decided to stay in town (and is apparently staying with Scott and Melissa...?) but Scott vows that he is not welcome there.
And what of Jennifer? When Scott went back to the distillery, she was gone. That is because she wasn’t actually dead, though she nearly was. Instead, she crawled weakly to the nemeton, begging for it to heal her once more. She is stopped by Peter and taunts him because she knows he wants to be an alpha again. “Again? Again? I am the alpha - I’ve always been the alpha.”
Was that supposed to be a surprise? Because I always assumed Peter was still evil, or at least evil-esque.
Dig It or Bury It?
A really engrossing episode, with something of a disappointing denouement. I think I liked last week’s episode better, but in general, I try not to analyze this show too much because if I do, the plot holes (or plot gloss-overs) become too big to ignore. What is up with Deucalion the demon wolf? What the hell is the story with Cora? How was Jennifer so strong? Why did the twins survive? I’m sure much of this will be explained in season 3.5, coming in January.
Also, the ridiculously happy ending left a bad taste in my mouth. It was so pat, so idyllic, and I didn’t feel like the Peter / Jennifer tag at the end was strong enough or ominous enough to cut through the treacle.
While technically a mid-season hiatus, the show doesn’t return until January 6th, and this feels like a “season” finale.
