In This Episode...
With the whole town being dosed with vervain, Elena is getting hungry and restless. She rejoins the cheerleader squad to “give her something to do,” but really she is using it as an excuse to hang out with non-vervained cheerleaders bussed in from all over the state. Elena follows one rival cheerleader out to the bus and takes a big bite - all because the girl wouldn’t give Elena her hair ribbon. Caroline immediately figures out what is going on when Elena returns with a ribbon in her hair and a scarf around the girl’s neck. Caroline confronts Elena and won’t let her cheer; Elena responds with the equivalent of “you’re not the boss of me.” She cheers, but deliberately misses a catch, causing Caroline to crash to the floor - an accident that would paralyze a human cheerleader.
With Elena’s humanity turned off, she no longer has a sire bond with Damon. Elena makes a big deal about “feeling nothing” and just wanting to have fun. So Stefan promises to show her a good time - and instead vervains her. Back at home, he tries to reason with her; she basically throws a tantrum, unhappy about being “grounded.” Stefan doesn’t help matters when he compares her to Katherine. Elena has been texting constantly and Stefan takes her phone away. Music comes from downstairs: Elena had been arranging a huge kegger. Caroline shows up and tries to encourage him to relax a little bit and have fun. Elena sure is, dancing on the tables and pouring booze down everyone’s throats. Elena almost seems jealous when she sees Stefan and Caroline dancing together and storms over to them - but quickly dismisses the notion. The sheriff shows up to break up the party, and Elena throws her against the wall. Caroline goes berserk, Elena escapes the party, and Caroline and Stefan head into the woods to find her. They split up, and Caroline finds Elena first. The two have a good ol’ fashioned catfight, and Elena tries to stake Caroline with a tree branch. The Salvatores break them up. Damon takes Elena home, but soon sneaks her out. If you can’t beat them, join them: Damon and Elena head out on a road trip to New York.
Elsewhere, Damon and Rebekah are following a lead on a vampire who might know where Katherine is. He had attacked Hayley at a truck stop and Klaus took a big bite out of him, so Damon and Rebekah are racing against the clock. They finally find him, and Damon recognizes him - an old friend named Will. Damon rips his heart out with his bare hands, then when Rebekah comes around, he claims Will was too far gone and wanted to save him the suffering.
Also: Hayley is becoming chummy with Klaus. They have sex, and he recognizes a distinctive moon-shaped birthmark that belonged to a specific werewolf bloodline. Tyler signs the deed of his house over to Matt - he is not coming back to town. Seven area hospitals have all reported that their blood reserves have been completely raided. Stefan finally figures out why: Silas hasn’t fed in thousands of years - and he’s hungry.
Dig It or Bury It?
I got all excited for tonight's return and quite frankly it was a bore. Elena's "bad girl" routine was quite tame compared to how I remember high school. (Not me; I was a saint. The other girls at school were way worse than Elena.) I want to get back to Silas's story. That is far more interesting than girls gone mild. Even when Elena is insisting that she doesn't care, she sounds like a petulant child throwing a temper tantrum.
Hayley is just annoying me more with each passing episode.
Damon promises Stefan that the trip to New York is in the name of cure-hunting... but then he tells Elena that in a city like New York, no one will notice a death or two...
