We open where last season ended: Bobby, Dean, and Sam in the lab, staring at a newly empowered Castiel. He feels no need to kill the guys and promises that if they remember their place, they may stay in his kingdom.

This season, we made it back from hell, and retrieved a soul. We've seen (well, heard about) civil war in heaven. We've fought shifters, vampires, fairies, and elves. We've seen directing debuts from star Jensen Ackles and writer/producer Ben Edlund. We have seen the greatest meta episode of all time, "The French Mistake." And we have seen a new god take to the throne. What the hell is left?

The guys discover that one of the Campbell family journals was taken by Cas - luckily, Bobby made a copy. The journal detailed a ritual held in 1937 by writer H.P. Lovecraft and some friends who were trying to open a portal to purgatory.

We finally get to hear Castiel's side of the story. He narrates like a confessional (it is later revealed that he is asking god for a sign of what he should do).

Eve blows into a small town in Oregon, spreading her own special kind of pain. She spreads disease quickly through the town, creating shapeshifters and demons and other bloodthirsty creatures.

We head back to the wild west. In digging through the Campbell family library (a bomb shelter crammed with ephemera), Bobby finds evidence that what they may need to defeat the Mother is ash from a phoenix.

A rash of deadly accidents draw Sam and Dean's attentions. The first three victims in the vicinity are all cousins, so they first investigate the possibility of a family curse. That takes them nowhere, and a fourth death has no relation with the previous.

Bobby, Dean and Sam investigate a cannery trucker who blacked out and went crazy, bludgeoning his entire family with a hammer. Less than 24 hours later, a man at the same cannery goes nuts and opens fire on his coworkers. He takes out six before the cops riddle him with bullets.

This episode was one of those episodes that had no real bearing on the overall series story arc - it was more like recess. A fun, silly episode that was great on its own and comes across as a love letter to fans.

Sam and Dean head to New Jersey to report the mysterious death of a janitor in a community college lab. Despite security cameras running at all times, the death was not captured on camera - that section of tape is just missing.
