There is an embarrassment of horror riches on TV these days. In some ways, that makes it easier to choose ten best episodes, because you have a ton of options to choose from. In other ways, it makes it more difficult because there are so many options to choose from, and you have to sift through the bad to get to the good.
The Vampire Diaries
Wes has Elena in the basement of her father’s old medical practice. This was where he helped the Augustines - and where he experimented on vampires. Elena has vague memories of sneaking downstairs, hearing heinous sounds of torture behind a closed door, remembering her father gently telling her to go upstairs, that this isn’t a “kid zone.”
Elena pays Aaron a visit. He is mourning the death of Jesse, and Elena doesn’t want burden him, but Aaron’s day “can’t get any worse.” She is looking for Damon and Wes; neither have been seen since the night before.
It is day 14 of Jesse’s “treatments.” Wes gives him some blood via transfusion and he roars to life, breaking through his shackles (“physical strength is an unforeseen side effect”) and sucking the bag of blood dry. Then he turns on Wes.
Silas no longer wants to help Damon and the others bring back Bonnie. He just wants to kill Amara, bring down the veil, and kill himself so they can enjoy death together.
Silas is now a witch and he is excited to die. He seems poised to keep his promise: he will bring Bonnie back before killing himself. Or as he kills himself - I don’t know how it works. But first he must find and destroy the anchor so that the supernatural purgatory falls.
A slow start with a few big reveals… oh, and it is at another school dance.
It’s Remembrance Day in Mystic Falls, the day that everyone celebrates the dead by drinking and ringing a bell. Seems appropriate since an inordinate number of the denizens die every year. The festival began several hundred years ago, when a cholera outbreak panicked the town and caused some people to be buried alive.
Damon and Elena find Stefan, along with an unwelcome new face, and we finally find out why Katherine is the most wanted girl in the supernatural world.
Katherine flags down a car for help. The woman is one of Silas’ mind control zombies, and she tries to grab her. Katherine knocks her out but is surprised at how much it hurts to do that as a human. Then Matt happens along with a rifle. He and Jeremy tie up Katherine and drive out of town.
