Twilight

A few weeks ago, Saw VI and Paranormal Activity murdered the box office, proving Horror is very much alive.  New Moon comes out today, and although the weekend’s hardly started, it’s safe to say that the genre will once again take the #1 spot.  The Twilight sequel’s been breaking records for almost a week and demonstrating genre films aren’t just for the boys.

According to Fandango, this past Saturday night New Moon scored #1 in advanced ticket sales, surpassing Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Other fun facts?  72% of ticket holders plan to see it in a group of 3 or more, and 22% are mothers and daughters seeing it together.

I have my own daughter to thank for my relationship with Twilight.  Far before the first movie was greenlit, she came to me and insisted I read it. We totally bonded over the series and are both looking forward to New Moon; she and her friends already have their tickets for Friday night.

Whether you’re a Twihard or a Twihater, it’s impossible to deny that Twilight has had a major effect on moviegoers across the nation.   It’s been the biggest thing in tourism for the town of Forks, Washington, which is capitalizing on the franchise with Bella- and Edward-themed stores, and fans from all over the country flew to Los Angeles and camped out for days so that they could experience the New Moon premiere.  I think it’s exciting that both young and older generations are uniting with such enthusiasm for the genre; it’s a phenomenon that I’m thrilled to be a part of.

So are you planning on seeing New Moon this weekend?  And would you say you’re an Edward fan or a Jacob fan?  I’m admittedly on Team Edward.
