The Bloody Vampire

Speaking of K. Gordon Murray flicks, this one is my favorite. It scared the hell out of me when I saw it on TV as a kid.

It's a black and white movie about a vampire called "Count Frankenhausen." He has a menacing female assistant, Frau Hildegarde, and a wife who protects herself from him by pointing a lance at his heart. He travels around in a horsedrawn coach that seems to float above the ground. He keeps the women he turns in trunks on the cellar floor, whose lids pop open by themselves at his command like in a stage magic act. And he's cruel -- he punishes his butler by having this shirtless beefcake executioner type rip out his tongue.

A lot about it is silly. The dubbing is bad, the American script ridiculous -- there's a Van Helsing-like scientist who tries to save the day with a curative plant that only grows on the site of hangings, who names the substance he extracts from it "Vampirina" (which to me sounds more like dog food for Zoltan, Hound Of Dracula!)

But the film is so eerie looking, especially the lighting, that it manages to be a very spooky experience anyway. There are some very scary shots of the count running down hallways from the victim's point of view -- snarling with fangs exposed, his cloak billowing -- that were later imitated in "Count Yorga, Vampire," among other films.

Anyone else rememeber this one?

You're welcome. Hope you get to see it. Nobody ever shows these Mexican movies on TV anymore -- the last time I'm aware of it being shown was on "Commdander USA's Groovy Movies!" It has been released as a DVD, though.
