The other day we had the opportunity to sit and chat with director Alex Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes) at his LA editing bay while he finishes up work on his latest feature, Mirrors. We couldn?t help but sneak in a few questions about his 3-D 'reimagining' of the ?78 Joe Dante ?classic? Piranha.
Aja tells us, ?We decided to take that movie and write that script right after The Hills Have Eyes and you know meanwhile we were writing the script and then we moved to Eastern Europe to make Mirrors. In finishing Mirrors we are finishing the writing of Piranha. The complete opposite of Mirrors will be Piranha, [It?s] like drawing the blueprint of a rollercoaster. Here [with Mirrors] it's completely the opposite it's about character, really dark feelings and dark mythology and stuff where Piranha is [about] killing drunk kids. It's a completely different story [and] it's not a remake at all. There is not a link to the [original] movie besides the fish. And even our fish are quite different. It's really like a new take on doing a movie about Piranhas. It's [set] during spring break and [it?s] about killing drunk teenagers with prehistoric fish.
When we asked Aja about the 3-D technology he tells FEARnet ?It's really the most interesting thing about the process, the main reason we took that movie and are so excited [is] because we're going to do the movie in that new 3-D technology. And that's just the best thing ever. We were so excited when we thought about sitting in a room and seeing Avatar we were like OK, let's imagine we're going to see a horror movie that's the ultimate effect, creating immersion for the audience like in a nightmare. But at the same time you need that kind of popcorn energy and popcorn dark humor thing.? Aja turns to his longtime friends and collaborators Gregory Levasseur and Baxter telling us ?So yeah, we are excited, we're supposed to shoot this fall, right after [Mirrors] we are supposed to jump top the prep of Piranha, that's going to be fun. We're happy we are three French guys in LA doing whatever we want.?
We also asked Aja about his working relationship with KNB Effects and Greg Nicotero, he tells us, ?Everything is scripted, very detailed on the script. We met [Nicotero] through Wes Craven, he came with this guy to a far away set in Morocco and he did such an amazing job [on The Hills Have Eyes]. We share the idea of doing as much practical effects as we can. What is cool about Greg is that he knows the limit of his work and when CG can help and we share the same taste on movies. We're already talking about Pirahna, when you find great people to work with you just have to stay with them.?
Finally Aja cleared a recent rumor that popped up on IMDB announcing his involvement with a Silent Night Deadly Night remake. Aja?s response, ?That is false, we have nothing to do with it? Thank God!
