The coven of actors from the upcoming vampire flick Twilight descended upon last week?s Comic-Con, creating an uproar of excitement among the thousands of fans waiting to catch a glimpse of the stars. The screams of crushed-out Cullen devotees could be heard far outside the convention center hall in which the Twilight panel was held, and numerous fans were spotted wearing ?Team Edward? and ?Team Jacob? shirts, depending on where their vamp vs. werewolf allegiances lay.
We got the chance to speak with Taylor Lautner, who plays Jacob Black, the friend of Bella with a wolfy secret, and Edi Gathegi, who plays Laurent, the one good vampire stuck in a coven of bad blood-suckers. The actors?who were wearing much less eyeliner than I had hoped?described for FEARnet how they got their vamp on and gave us the scoop on what?s in store for followers of the undead Twilight saga...
Have you seen these "Team Jacob" shirts around? How do you feel about them?
Lautner: I definitely have. It?s weird to see my character?s name on other people's bodies.
Can you address the frenzied popularity of this book and what has inspired it?
Gathegi: I think the book is popular because it deals with human behavior and real issues like love, life, and death?and everybody can relate to that. The fans are hungry to see this film and we?re eager to show them a good representation of what Stephenie wrote in her book.
Have you kept track of what?s going on with the fans online?
Gathegi: Well, here?s the thing. I?ve been told as an actor never to read what?s been written about you because it?s going to affect you, but I am a Twilight fan, so I?m one of them! I'm online checking out what?s going on and I can?t wait for Breaking Dawn to come out. I?m a ?Twi-Hard.? I?m a dork.
Are you fans of the vampire genre or werewolf stories?
Gathegi: I wasn?t a vampire fan, but I?ve always had the secret desire to play one. And after reading these books I was like, ?This is a fantastic vampire story because it?s a romance and it can be set anywhere. It?s a mixed-up world and very believable.? So I was excited about getting to do this particular film? And it?s sexy.
What is so sexy about vampires?
Gathegi: Immortality, super- strength, super-speed? In the book they are described as?and I wouldn?t be so pretentious to say that I am this?but they?re gorgeous. Every guy wants to have that kind of speed and strength and be able to seduce a woman with their eyes or whatever.
Did you have to get anything make-up wise?
Gathegi: No, the rules in this world are very different. No fangs, no garlic, no crosses. Which is very cool because it?s a new take on vampires.
How do you tap into your inner vampire?
Gathegi: Everything is delicious to me. That?s all it is. Basically, they were all humans at one point and they got turned, so the difference is they are just faster and stronger and they don?t die. So what happens when you don?t die? You have to figure out things to entertain yourself. So you know, I?m kind of a party guy. I think my vampire just wants to know where the action is.
What about the comic-book movies? Have you guys been into this summer?s movies?
Gathegi: I love comic books brought to life. X-Men, I loved that. I saw Iron Man and I thought that was one of the best. The first Batman was amazing and I just saw the second Batman and thought it was really good. I?m a comic-book junkie.
Is there anything that?s going to surprise fans of the book?
Lautner: I know there?s a couple of things that weren?t in the book, but for the most part the movie script is pretty identical to the book. It?s 100 pages rather than 500 pages, but they did an amazing job translating it into the script. I think the exciting part is bringing the fans? favorite characters to the big screen.
Did you guys have to do a lot of action work in this film?
Gathegi: Yeah, we did wire work, we did all our own stunts. It?s all live stuff. There?s not CGI stuff like in other movies. I got to do the ?magic carpet,? which is pretty much like a people mover?it?s moving 15 miles an hour and I walk on top of it so the illusion is that I?m walking 30 miles an hour through the forest. There?s a lot of great action in the movie.
Lautner: I actually didn?t have any action in this film, sadly. I got to drive an old truck, if you consider that action.
What was it like working with Kristen, and did you guys form a bond on set?
Lautner: Kristen?s awesome. She?s an amazing actress and she?s a lot of fun. So I?m looking forward to working with her more. Everybody has good chemistry on this set.
Stay tuned, Twi-hards! There are more Twilight interviews to come?with Edward, Victoria, James and creator Stephenie Meyer!
