Listen up Twi-hards! We?ve saved the best, or at least the most evil, Twilight interview we got at Comic-Con for last. We had the opportunity to chat with Cam Gigandet, whom you might know as misunderstood O.C. bad boy Volchok, about his experience playing James in the upcoming Twilight film adaptation. Gigandet told us why he loves to be bad, how easy it is to relate to his vampy role and why playing a blood-sucking vampire is better than playing a veggie vampire any day?
Note: After reading the following interview, be sure to check out our conversation with stars Taylor Lautner and Edi Gathegi, Twilight?s Jacob Black and Laurent, and our interview with creator Stephenie Meyer and director Catherine Hardwick, as well as our Twilight Video Interviews!
Tell us a little about your character.
Gigandet: I play James. I am the bad vampire. I?m a tracker. For numerous reasons, my sole obsession is basically to kill Bella. And to have Edward watch and know about it and feel about it is the topping on the cake.
What is so appealing about going after Bella? What drives him?
Gigandet: A lot of things. One would be Edward?s fascination with her, because I see Edward and I see that Edward has something that I do not have. Because Edward actually has love in his life, and even though I have a girlfriend in the movie I don?t have what he has. And because I don?t have it, I want to break it. All the vampires feel that she has that extra something even though she?s human. We?ve all been around humans, but this one is different for whatever reason. We all have our different perceptions about why she?s different.
Do you see your character as evil?
Gigandet: What he does is, obviously, evil in the literal sense. But, his reasoning is not. I think it?s relatable. He?s someone who?s had a broken heart, who?s never felt love and who never will. Someone who?s had people in his life and ends up alone at the end of the day. I think, seeing that and seeing someone else who?s had it, the choice he makes is obvious.
What about you? What?s fun about being a bad vampire?
Gigandet: They just have more fun. They don?t abide by any set of rules. The choices that they make?your hero or good guy could not make them. Just to feel that power and that malice and something that focused and determined, you just can?t really beat it. I?ve played the bad guy a lot and I just love it.
What makes you a good bad guy?
Gigandet: I thought I was such a nice guy! I should look back at high school maybe.
Your character has some pretty intense action scenes in the movie. What was involved in that?
Gigandet: A lot was involved. It was tough. The very first week we were actually shooting the big fight scene in the ballet studio. Just having that as your first thing was so intimidating. You?re diving in the deep end of the pool. It takes a lot of preparation. There was a lot of wire work and a lot of choreography. It was a difficult fight to choreograph in that you have two vampires with super strength and super speed. Everything has to be taken to that next level. I was a little scared, I?d never done wire work before. But, you really don?t have to do anything. It?s very scientific. All of a sudden you?re moving and all of a sudden you?re landing.
The vampires in the book are so graceful. Did you work on your movement?
Gigandet: Well, I?ve been a ballet student for fifteen years now.
Really?
Gigandet: No, not really. [Laughs.] But, I shot Never Back Down, which is also a fight movie and I played sports, so I have that kind of coordination. When we got to Oregon to film, we watched tigers and all of these animals that moved with such grace and such speed and made it look so easy. So yeah, it took a lot of commitment to run around like a cat, but you do what you?ve got to do.
