An article published at the New York Post’s website early this morning made quite an interesting observation about this weekend’s big release, Saw V. The article gathered all the box office numbers for Saw and several other major horror franchises of years past. All five installments of Saw have been produced for under 11 million dollars and the series has collected between 55 million and 87 million at the box office making it the most profitable horror franchise ever (the original Saw was made for just over a million and grossed 18 mill in its opening weekend with a 55 million dollar total at the finale of its theatrical run). Yes, there’s no doubt that the people backing Saw know how to make money. The question is, however, can Saw become the most successful horror franchise ever?

The only competition that stands in Saw’s way right now is the Friday the 13th series, which is the only major horror franchise to gross over 300 million dollars at the box office. That’s right -- not Michael Myers, not Freddy Kruger, not the string of people six degrees separated from Sidney Prescott who wanted her dead in the Scream films -- none have been able to pass the 300 mark. Friday’s numbers currently stand at 347.8 million dollars -- around 62.8 million more than Saw has made. But here’s the kicker…there have been ten Friday the 13th films and the above numbers don't include Saw V, meaning that if Saw V grosses more than 62.8 million dollars in its theatrical run (which is entirely possible) it can become the top-grossing horror franchise of all time in the half the amount of movies it took Mr. Voorhees to do it in. What do you think? Does Saw deserve this title?
