It was reported just a month or so ago that Johnny Depp would be shrugging off two films, vampire flick Dark Shadows and drug trafficking drama Shantaram, in order to make a fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.  Well Collider had the chance to sit down with producer Richard Zanuck, who revealed that’s not exactly true.  According to Zanuck, Depp is still attached to play the role of bloodsucker Barnabas Collins in Dark Shadows and that the film will be Tim Burton’s follow-up to his current project, Alice in WonderlandDark Shadows, written by John August, is based on the cult '60s supernatural TV show created by Dan Curtis that aired weekdays on ABC, from 1966 to 1971.  Over 1,225 episodes, Dark Shadows was a highly atmospheric, spooky soap that featured gothic horror staples like vampires, monsters, witches, werewolves, ghosts and zombies.  It upset me deeply to think that Depp would pass up Dark Shadows and Shantaram to do what seemed an extremely superfluous Pirates 4 – but leave it to Depp to surprise us all.  It’s a good day to be a horror fan.
