After a big bang at the box-office its debut weekend, followed by the quick-fire announcement of a sequel, it seems the follow-up to tween vamp hit Twilight might have taken a step backward from the finish line. According to Variety, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has officially announced she will opt not to direct the second installment of the series, New Moon. Hardwicke delivered the biggest opening weekend gross for a female director ever upon Twilight’s release the weekend of November 21st, but apparently Summit Entertainment is moving too fast on New Moon for her. Word on the street is that Summit was gung ho to get New Moon out as fast as possible, receiving its first draft of the screenplay from writer Melissa Rosenberg on the day Twilight was set to open, while Hardwicke wanted more time to prepare the film. Other reports indicate that the studio’s device to incorporate Edward into more of New Moon’s story didn’t gel with Hardwicke’s vision for the sequel. Looks like Summit will end up spending more time finding another director than they planned in getting New Moon to theaters.
