Super Psycho Sweet 16

This Friday at 10pm EST MTV will premiere Jacob Gentry's (The Signal) prime time slasher flick, My Super Psycho Sweet 16. Made in the 2000's but DEFINITELY born out of the 80's there are enough slasher references to keep any bonafied horror fanatic happy for a few ours on a Friday night.

We had the chance to sit with Madison Penrose herself as played by Julianna Guill (you may remember her 'revealing' scene from Platinum Dunes Friday the 13th reboot) and we chatted everything from slasher to John Hughes. Check out the full interview below.

FEARnet: First the Friday the 13th remake and now My Super Psycho Sweet 16, looks like you’re on your way to becoming a regular scream queen.

Julianna Guill: (Laughs) It's funny the way it's panned out I've been so lucky to do these 2 great horror films, I don't know about a scream queen but that does seem to be the way it's shaping up right now. I mean, horror is such a fun genre it's been really great to work on those two movies.

Was there any hesitation jumping on board My Super Psycho Sweet 16 after Friday the 13th?

For me it wasn't going right into it, it was a year and a half since we shot Friday the 13th, in my mind it was spaced out with a big gap between. And the films are so different, almost a different genre. Friday the 13th is such an iconic horror film and My Super Psycho Sweet 16 is more a comedy horror film.

To me, it comes across like a slasher film that could have been made by John Hughes. You have the popular guy who goes for the unpopular girl, the spoiled brat and like every slasher film from the 80's, twenty-somethings playing high school kids.

Yeah, I definitely agree, we're not 16 by any means but we're all in the same age range playing 16 and 17 in everything we're doing so it was really cool to be close to that age and to remember high school in a very specific and clear way.

Were you familiar with the MTV show at all? It’s pretty scary in its own right.

Sure I remember flipping through the channels as a kid and coming across my Super Sweet 16 and watching, getting sucked. It's such an addicting thing to watch.

Would you consider yourself to be a fan of horror, or slashers in general?

I always have a hard time watching horror movies that I'm not in because they really scare me. When I'm in them I know it's not real, but when I'm watching them I have a really hard time. I think they're cool, and I think the genre is really cool, but it's not something that I flock to on a regular basis because I tend to be a huge whimp.

My Super Psycho Sweet 16 had a lot of 80’s slasher references in it, you’re gonna have a lot of horror nerds coming up to you now…are you feeling any pressure?

(laughs) No pressure to know (these references), I'm excited to learn and would love to hear and learn more from fans of the genre. I’m curious to learn more about the genre.

So from the looks of it, the film was shot as if it were an R or Unrated film, specifically in regards to the kills and violence?

In terms of the violence, the cut we saw the other day was prob not the cut that will be used on the network. But when we shot it, as far as other things you look for in ratings, we were very careful because it's an MTV movie that was going to air on the network.

So no language or nudity then?

Yup, no nudity no language, all of those things were avoided. I think with the violence they went all out. The kills were so great and the special effects were just wonderful.

Any second thoughts along the way, was anything really difficult to shoot?

The chase scenes were something I didn't get to do before; in Friday the 13th I didn't have any chase scenes. It was such a great first experience to be chased by a killer and film that and feel that adrenaline rush. I mean, I felt like I wanted to do an action movie right after this because it was so much fun. It was challenging and exhausting, especially when Lauren and I are running around in 3-inch heels (laughs).

The other scene was the scene with Lauren when we're in the basement of the Roller Dome being held captive, it was a very emotional scene, but was so fun to shoot.

And I’m assuming that it’s fun to play bad, you’re character is REALLY bad.

It's very fun to play bad! My character in this movie is really evil, it's a scary thing to allow yourself to do, but if you can, it's really a good time.

What’s your biggest fear?

I'm afraid of water, open water. I love swimming and the ocean but I'm afraid of open water and the dark.

Make sure we don't get you in the water in the dark. Forget about it.

Oh my god, that's horrible, that's terrifying.
