Earlier today at WonderCon I caught up with the reigning Prince of the Undead (because, let's face it, Romero remains the King) – Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman. The red-hot comic, and now TV, creator couldn't say much about the upcoming second season of his comic book's smash TV adaptation, but he did tell me a little bit about a new medium with which he's currently exploring his zombie universe: the prose novel. Kirkman's co-authoring the first Walking Dead novel, and he hinted at which character the book will focus on. Find out what Kirkman told me after the jump.

"St. Martin's is going to have the Walking Dead novel that I'm co-writing with Jay Bonansinga out in October," said Kirkman. "I think that's when it's released. Fall I'll say definitively."

"Jay Bonansinga did the lion's share of the heavy lifting on that. I provided him story outlines and character beats and where I wanted the story to go and what I wanted the people to do. But as far as the nuts and bolts of actually putting that together, that was all Jay. So I can't say that I feel like I learned a whole lot about novel writing. Because I kind of leaned on that guy to do everything. But it's a fun novel. It's kind of cool. It definitely fits into the Walking Dead world of the comic books, and fills in the gaps."

When I asked Kirkman if he could hint at what the book's story will involve, he replied, "You know, I don't know if we've released that yet. I can say that it focuses on acharacter that is probably one of the most popular characters from the Walking Dead comic. But they are not in the comic anymore. So it's kind of their backstory. And it fills in a lot of gaps from the comic series that you may not have even known were even there. It's really cool."
