Dexter week is wrapping up here on FEARnet. The end begins this Sunday. All good things must come to an end and all that... well, we will save the eulogies until September, when the series draws to a close. For now, let’s continue on our journey down memory lane...
Yesterday, we took a look at some of the most intriguing killers Dexter felt necessary to put down. But today, let’s focus on some of the most gruesome crime scenes that make Dexter’s kills justifiable.
Episode 103 - Hockey Rink Death
The Ice Truck Killer is, obviously, one of the most iconic killers of the series. But this one, where his victim was found dismembered, wrapped in butcher paper, and stacked neatly in an ice hockey goal, this was always an image that stuck with me. Maybe it is because I was a figure skater when I was a kid, and spent every day at the ice rink. Maybe it shattered my illusions of my childhood “happy place.” Or maybe it is just a wicked-cool scene.
Episode 412 - Rita
Oh come on, you know I had to include this one! It may not be the most gory scene, but it was certainly the most horrifying. How many other TV shows would actually kill off a major character like that? Plus then you get the whole Dexter / Harrison “born out of blood” parallel.
Season 5 - The Barrel Girls
We don’t actually see any of the girls die, but the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the Barrel Girls (plus that catchy nickname) make them extremely memorable to me. A dozen or more girls, all kidnapped, tortured, beaten, starved, and raped until their captors were bored - then killed, shoved in barrels, and dumped into the swamp.
Episode 604 - The Angel of Death
Another grim tableau from the Doomsday Killer, this kill would fit in well with any Saw film. A woman is suspended in a greenhouse bound and gagged but still alive. The greenhouse is booby-trapped, and when one of the police set off the tripwire, setting off a Rube Goldberg machine that causes the girl to drop about a foot, extend her arms out, and pierce her jugular against a carefully placed spiked collar.
Episode 603 - The Horseman of the Apocalypse
This is one of my all-time favorite Dexter kills. The Doomsday Killer dismembered his victim, then stitched the pieces together with a mannequin in order to create two Horsemen of the Apocalypse - complete with horses. The stitched-together pieces offer a haunting, disjointed movement, like a possessed marionette.
