If you've been visiting us on a fairly regular basis, you've probably seen a lot of stories cropping up about eerie abandoned locations from every corner of the world. Why? Because the hobby of “urban exploration” is definitely a thing lately, with greater numbers of professional and amateur photographers poking around the ruins of abandoned factories, parks, homes... even entire cities, their populations long gone for a variety of reasons (some more sinister than others).

It seems almost every city on the planet harbors a crumbling hideaway with a troubled past, long-forgotten secrets and a haunted reputation, and these intrepid explorers have been documenting them for all to see – sometimes at great personal risk. It's no surprise that more than one abandoned mental hospital made it on this list; the tales of anguish and despair that once unfolded behind those faded, peeling institutional walls are the stuff nightmares are made of.
