This Creepy Blue Tarantula is Totally Metal

So you've probably figured out from our horrifying news stories that spiders are busily taking over the planet. But seriously, are these eight-legged devils actually smart enough to build robots now? Looking at this specimen from southern India, you might think so.

Okay, so this shiny blue creature is not really a cyborg. But as you can tell by its handle Poecilotheria metallica, it's still pretty damn metal. Known also as the peacock tarantula and sapphire tree spider, this arachnid's natural bling includes a fractal-type pattern on its back in blue, pink or purple. Its eye cluster is also bluish in color – and looks waaaay freaky in close-up photos.

Today Poecilotheria metallica is considered an endangered species, due to reduction of its forest habitat from logging and collectors who pay top dollar for the spiders as pets.
