Matt Mulcahey's Deep Fried Movies is fairly new to the blogosphere, but it's already winning our hearts with some amazing rare & retro horror movie images – including behind-the-scenes photos from classics like The Exorcist and vintage promos for John Carpenter's greatest films. But the crown jewel this month is “The 100 Greatest VHS Horror Covers,” a gallery that's pretty much self-explanatory, and should spark a twinkle in the eye of any horror fan and/or tape collector who remembers those bygone days of wide-eyed video store browsing.
“A weekend trip to the video store was a rite of passage,” Mulcahey writes of his childhood fascination with the forbidden fruit promised by lurid VHS box art. “This list is a tribute to those weekend trips. It was compiled in the most scientific way possible – I tried to remember what box covers enticed me the most when I was 12 years old.”
The gallery launched Monday with two posts of 50 images apiece, curated from sources far and wide – including the sites VHS Cover Art, Critical Condition, Monster Brains and VHS Wasteland.
