German filmmaker Uwe Boll has made a career for himself by churning out quick flicks adapted from video games. But his next film isn't actually his. Based on the semi-obscure 1998 first-person shooter for the Amiga computer, Uwe Boll is merely producing Zombie Massacre; the directing reins were taken up by Luca Boni and Marco Ristoni of Eaters fame. Read on to see what Uwe can tell us about the project.
How involved are you in Zombie Massacre?
I am the guy who finances the whole movie. I am the cash flow. The guys who did Eaters [Luca Boni and Marco Ristoni] are directing this. They are really talented Italian directors who normally do music videos and stuff like that. I loved [Eaters] and I wanted to make and direct Zombie Massacre on my own, so I said to them I would be willing to finance them and their style , shooting in Italy, but they have to shoot it in English. So they are doing this now. They have a lot of known horror actors already attached to it, like the guy from the new The Crazies movie [Brett Wagner] and Texas Chainsaw [we are not sure who he is talking about - ed.]. They are all fans and have traveled to Italy to make the film with them.
The story is that [the heroes] have to put the bomb in the middle of the city to wipe out the zombies. That is the goal. There are no airplanes anymore, so they have to drive there, and of course, zombies are attacking you on the way in, and on the way out. This is what happens in the video game. It is a very simple Escape From New York-type story. Normally, these kinds of stories for genre movies work well. So I am very excited about it. I think it will be a great movie to watch if you are a zombie fan. It will, of course, be a very hard R-rating.
How can you not be a zombie fan?
Exactly! That is the reason I wanted to do House of the Dead. It was not really the game, it was that I was a zombie fan.
