The controversial reboot of the 1980 splatter classic Maniac, written and produced by Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes) and directed by Franck Khalfoun (P2) with Elijah Wood in the title role, makes its official (but limited) US theatrical premiere today, along with a simultaneous Video On Demand debut. To mark the occasion, Crave Online has launched a new behind-the-scenes video showing how makeup effects expert Mike McCarty (of the famous KNB FX Group) created the film's most gruesome moments.

Appropriately titled “Maniac: Blood and Gore,” the lengthy featurette includes Tom Savini's notorious splatter scenes from Bill Lustig's original film, interviews with Wood, Aja, Khalfoun, and McCarty on location, and of course massive spoilers depicting the film's brutal murders and scalpings.
