Pop icon Katy Perry already had quite a rep for making seriously out-there music videos (whipped cream boobie-guns, anyone?), but she just jumped light-years ahead with the bizarre but beautiful sci-fi/fantasy epic "E.T." which premiered on MTV after a cosmic storm of advance buzz. The clip is a mega-budget mashup of aliens, robots, and Kanye West in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, with Perry playing a glowing galactic goddess. We've got the clip on the flip, so hit the jump and check it out.
"E.T." was directed by Floria Sigismondi (whose credits include videos for The Cure, The White Stripes and Sigur Ros), with elaborate visual and makeup effects that play out on a massive scale better suited to a giant movie screen. Katy morphs from one strange, gorgeous form to another – even sprouting a pair of deer legs at one point – and romances an eerie albino cyborg (who apparently has no butt crack), while Kanye kicks rhymes from orbit in his own personal satellite. Since this clip comes hot on the heels of Lady Gaga's trippy "Born This Way," which was also loaded with androids and androgynous aliens, we're starting to notice a trend. Not a bad thing... just saying.
The video made its MTV debut just one day after the song hit the top slot on the Billboard Hot 100 list, which makes it the fourth single from Perry's album Teenage Dream to hit #1.
