NSFW 'Maniac' Trailer Is Deeply Unsettling

Fans of William Lustig’s original story of scalp-loving slasher Frank may actually like what they see here in the trailer for Maniac.

Sure, it’s kind of funny to hear Elijah Wood’s voice behind the POV stalker cam imagery, but director Franck Khalfoun’s take on the original Maniac is decidedly bleak and void of camp. The trailer is riddled with dream-like moments and brutal visions from the killer's unflinching perspective. Though we've seen an achilles tendon being slashed before, Khalfoun delivers the stomach-turning image beautifully. Decidely more artistic than the grindhouse offering, I am curious to see if Khalfoun updated the original's Savini disco scene.

FEARnet’s Scott Weinberg had this to say about Maniac, “Packed with sly little in-jokes for the horror fans and powered by a simply fantastic musical score by 'Rob,' the new version of Maniac is a hard-ass horror film that also has some disconcertingly beautiful components.”

Watch the trailer below. Maniac is in theaters right around Christmas.
