Robert Downey Jr. joins 'Cowboys and Aliens'!

Robert Downey Jr. is ditching the Mark III for... cowboy boots? No, RDJ isn't giving up film for a Garth Brooks concert (although who can resist the soothing honky-tonk of Garth?). But according to the Hollywood Reporter he's in negotiations with Dreamworks and Universal to headline their 2010 tentpole Cowboys and Aliens. The film, which centers on an Old West battle between the Apache and Western settlers that is interrupted by a spaceship crashing into the prairie near Silver City, Arizona, is based on a graphic novel by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley from an original idea by Platinum Studios chairman and CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg. The story draws a parallel between the American imperialist drive to conquer the "savage" Native Americans with its advanced technology and the aliens' assault on Earthlings, who must join together to survive the invaders' attack. Sounds interesting. What's more interesting is that apparently the project has been gestating for the last ten years, with drafts of the script written by scribes like David Hayter (X2, Watchmen), Steve Oedekerk (Kung Pow: Enter the Fist, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls), Jeffrey Boam (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), Chris Hauty (Never Back Down, a.k.a. BEST MOVIE EVER), and Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (Sahara). However, the most recent draft of the script - the very one which has brought the project to fruition - was written by none other than Iron Man scribes Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus. Do I smell another versus-sequel project? Cowboys and Aliens vs. Iron Man. Ugh. I better knock on wood before it seriously happens...
