Are your eyes bleary from staring at a movie screen? Brain a little mushy from watching so much violence and horror? Take a break with some of these non-movie activities happening during SXSW. Yes, there are other things to do at SXSW than see movies.
Hardcore horror metallers Dawn of Ashes will be playing an all-ages set at 11:05pm March 16th at Emo's Annex. Don't be frightened off by the venue name; these guys are as horror-core as it gets. Don't believe me? Check out the video for their track "Transformation Within Fictional Mutation."
Eschewing labels, Kylesa is sometimes melodic, sometimes thrash, but always metal. "We just like playing heavy music and we've always liked playing it regardless of what is popular or trendy," says singer/guitarist Laura Pleasants of the Savannah quintet. Look for them at the Dirty Dog Bar at 9:40pm on March 18th. 21+ please.
These punk rock heroes from Akron, Ohio came up with the likes of the Sex Pistols and the Ramones - but with far less tragic results. They took a break in the 1990s (but really, who didn't?) but have been touring and recording consistently since then. They are playing Skinny's Ballroom at 11:10pm on March 17th. 21+
FOOD, DRINK, AND PARTIES
Time to soak up some of that liquor with food. Check out the SXSW Street Food Fest, where you can sample treats from some of Austin's best - and best named - gourmet food trucks: Along Came a Slider, Boomerang's Pies, Hey Cupcake, Clem's Hot Diggity Dogs, Chi'Lantro, One Taco, Old School BBQ & Grill, and more. Plus there will be a photo scavenger hunt, secret menu items, and more. Look for the trucks outside the events center on March 13th, starting around 11:00am
Okay, enough blood n' guts. Sit back and enjoy some lovely lades shaking their tail feathers at the Big Bang Bordello, 8:00pm on March 11th at Emo's Austin. The all-night burlesque show includes performances by Eva Strangelove, Crimson Skye, The Jigglewatts, and the Lollie Bombs, and live music from Flametrick Subs, Whiskey Business, That Damned Band, Barebones Orchestra, and more.
GAMES AND LOUNGES
Blow off some steam with the ScreenBurn Arcade. Some of the hottest game developers will be showing off their wares and offering demos of games old and new. Look for booths by Capcom, Insomniac, Mayfair, Sony, Twisted Pixel, Warner Bros., and more. Open afternoons, March 11th-13th.
Come play in a sandbox that is surprisingly free of child excrement. Sponsored by DeviantART.com, their "sandbox" includes an emerging artists gallery, a reading nook filled with art books from DeviantARTists, and of course, art tables for you to create at.
They've got booze. Need I say more?
