It's been a long time since I've revisited Eli Roth's second feature length film 'Hostel'. At the time it was released, I absolutely loved it. The idea of three back-packers exploring Eastern Europe in search of good times and some life experiences, but instead running afoul by an underground ring of people paying for the "sport" to torture innocents was genuienly unique for the horror genre in 2005. In fact, I credit this movie with creating the so-called "torture-porn" sub-genre that was dominated by imitators for the 2nd half of the 2000's over 'Saw'.
With Quentin Tarantino presenting and Eli Roth directing, I got a sense that this was a horror flick like we'd never seen before; one that was influenced by and emulating the whole Korean " vengeance" style of filmmaking as evident by the third act. Needless to say, it's a cool flick and now that it's currently one of our free movies streaming on the website, I think it's time to revisit it!
This Thursday we'll be swapping it out with 'Hostel: Part II', another sequel I haven't revisited since its initial theatrical run, but now's as good a time as ever to catch up on all the Hostel's. Hostel III (along with the other two movies) will be playing on our linear channel all this month. So be sure to tune in there. And if you still don't get FEARnet, request it in your area! In the meantime, watch the first 'Hostel' right now, and come back Thursday to stream Hostel: Part II.
