Abel Ferrara is exactly what you want in a grindhouse director. He is opinionated and brash yet respectful, with a thick Bronx accent that reeks of 42nd Street. In other words, he was a delight to chat with about Drafthouse Films’s upcoming rerelease of his 1981 rape/revenge flick Ms. 45.
What starts out as a nasty but familiar story (a mute young NYC woman is raped (twice!) in one day and takes revenge on her attackers) slowly evolves into a smart, dark, and strangely upsetting piece of character-based creepiness.
Abel Ferrara and writer Nicholas St. John’s first film, The Driller Killer, subverted the sexism found in most slasher flicks by offering a madman who targets derelicts rather than busty teens.
Drafthouse Films will soon be releasing an uncut and remastered edition of Abel Ferrara's 1981 vigilante thriller in select theaters. Read on for details, and check out the new re-release poster art!
