For me it's the original (Ringu) although I have to admit I had not seen it until I saw The Ring and someone told me I had to check out the movie it was based on. He said it was better and I agree!
Well...we did get a sort of adaptation of Loop in the form of the crappy ass dreamcast game that is incredibly unfaithful to the book. Apparently it plays similar to Parasite Eve, only sucky.
quote: probably a tie between ringu and the american version. agree with the above posting about the quality of the american version. but i felt like the story in ringu had a little more detail that i liked.
I thought the additional backstory took some of the mystery out of the film. Made it less creepy. Got to go with the American version on this one. That's a rarity for me.
My main problem with Ringu is that everyone believed the curse right away, no skepticism whatever, and practically everyone, from the villain's mom to the ex-husband, were psychics. At least the American film kept it in the real world where you have to be beat over the head to believe in the supernatural, and the only one with any powers was the kid. Though the towel-headed guy WAS creepy in Ringu, he was mostly used to point out to the heroine what she was missing about how to save her son, while the American figured it out by herself. But I still have the Ring Anthology (all 4 Japanese films) on DVD, so no one can say I hate them. Well, they can but they'd be liars.
I think it all depends on which one you saw first. I saw The Ring first and I liked it, good story effects, lighting etc. But Ringu was different in certain aspect of the story. It freaked me out a little where The Ring didn't. Like said it depends on which one you saw first.
I have only seen the two American versions and didn't really like either one. I read the first book and really enjoyed it, so I think the huge differences between that and the movies just ruined them for me.
