Caroline and Enzo head to Atlanta to find Tom. They talk to a doctor at his hospital, who says Tom was a pain in his ass, the best EMT he’s ever worked with, and he has been missing for four months.
The contestants each select a strand of mutated DNA. After they choose, they find out what their mutation is (think X-Men) and work with a digital artist to make their sketches. Makeup artist Valli O’Reilly is the guest judge.
In Milton, Illinois, a guy is watching TV when his wife comes home from the grocery store. He hassles her distractedly about the fact that she is making meatloaf for dinner, and she responds by bludgeoning him to death with a candlestick.
Emma wakes in bed at the motel with “cupcake boy.” She is embarrassed and slips out, then spends the rest of the episode ducking him. Outside, she finds Dylan passed out in his own vomit, in his truck.
Wrapping up last week’s cliffhanger, Claire didn’t really die; the FBI just faked it to get her into witness protection and keep her safe. But she is sick of witness protection, upset by the resurgence of Joe and Lily’s new cult, and she misses Ryan.
We don’t get much time to mourn Allison tonight because there is still the little problem of nogitsune-Stiles and his oni army to contend with.
When Len swoops in and “claims” a bunny that he and Daryl shot at about the same time, Daryl learns a lesson about Joe’s rules: all you have to say is “claim” to lay claim to anything: food, bed, weapon, whatever; you steal, you get killed; and no lying.
Beverly visits Will with more crime scene photos; this time of The Muralist, James Gray, in the mural. There were no signs of a struggle, and The Muralist would have worked alone, which means that the person who sewed him into his work had to understand him well enough to find his “studio” and have a feel for his artwork.
We open on a carnival. Max, an alcoholic performer is fighting with his girlfriend Genevieve, also a performer. She wants to be done with the carnival life; he says they can’t afford to. He stumbles onto the midway and two giggly girls, front row of tonight’s show, see him and beg to know the secrets of the show.
The kids are all partying at a bar, with Elena going especially “Coyote Ugly,” dancing and taking her shirt off. Suddenly she stops, mad that no one notices that she is Katherine. Then she wakes up - it was all a dream.
